The Emperor's Rams nex secundus , officium primoris

Founding : The founding of the Chapter was a collaboration between the Inquisition and the Adeptus Mechanicus.

Marines were raised/recruited using Gene-Seed stock held by the Adeptus Mechanicus in order to man the secret Inquisition Null Ships sent into the Eye of Terror. These ships were sent in secret tasked to gather intelligence prior to the Invasion in M******** and had an horrific casualty rate with very few returning. Of those that did return a large number had crews partially or even totally Daemonically possessed.

Discussions between the Inquisition and the Adpetus Mechanicus led to the idea of manning them with 6 man squads of Marines inlcuding and led by an Apothecary Sgt. The SGT would maintain vigilance over the navigators and crew, liquidating them at any sign of Daemonic possession whilst in the Warp. Also recovering gene-seed from Marines killed during boarding actions and samples of enemy taken and/or killed in action in the Eye. Many crews did not return and those that did had generally suffered high casualty rates.

The Eye Of Terror Campaign concluded and the Adeptus Mechanicas was left with an enviable problem. What to do with the surviving Marines? One of the surviving crews had chanced upon a battle between Chaos Mutants and a small Patrol of Black Consuls. The Black Consuls had been wiped out to a man but the Mutants were routed by the Null Ship crew. The Apothecary Sgt recovered samples of the mutants and also the Gene-Seed of the Black Consul Marines, returning it to Mars and the Adpetus Mechanicus. As the last Gene-Seed tithe from the Black Consuls was just over three centuries late, this led to another possible task for the Null Ship Marines; recovery of Gene-Seed from tardy Chapters.

Although the surviving Marines were too few for even a Company sized force, they were boosted with Veterans and Officers from a newly rediscovered Legion, The Sons of Aenaeus. With these re-enforcements a small Company sized Strike Force was organised. Their primary role was Battlefield recovery and Gene-Seed from fallen Marines and accompanying Tech Marines and/or Inquisitors on missions of a secretive nature. It is around this time that the Marines started un-officially calling themselves the Rams of the Emperor which then became an official name in the form of "The Emperors Rams". The colours had been chosen while in the Eye, Brown to remind them of the surface of Mars and Grey on the shoulder and knee pads to signify that the Emperors Light, no matter how dulled by the Warp, always shines through. The Grey later gravitated to the Back Pack.

The Chapter rarely goes to battle on foot and relies quite heavily on vehicle's for insertion and support.

Tac Squads are more often that not mounted in Rhino's and/or Razorbacks for fire support.

Landspeeders are used quite extensively in support of both the Initial Insertion/Strike Force and the main Battle Force that follows.They are all equipped with winches and other devices with which to extract wounded and/or dead Marines and vehicles.

Heavy Vehicles such as Predator and Landraider variants are maintained by the 10th Company and allocated to other Companies on an as required basis.
